Invisalign is a way to straigten teeth using a series of clear, removable almost invisible plastic aligners. Each aligner, worn for about two weeks, moves the teeth gradually and is then replaced with the next in the series. Invisalign is nearly invisible, you can eat what you want and you can brush and floss normally. There are no brackets, wires and less time needed for adjustments.
The Herbst appliance is very effective in correcting large overbites due to smaller lower jaws in patients who are growing. It is fixed to the upper and lower first molars with 6 braces on the upper front teeth.
It is generally worn for about 12 months. Upon removal, additional braces are added to complete treatment.
The Bionator is a removable applliance that holds the lower jaw forward helping the upper and lower jaws grow in proportion with each other. It is available in many colors with or without sparkles.
Sometimes a childs upper jaw is too narrow for the teeth to fit properly together. This is called a crossbite. A palatal expansion appliance is cemented to the permanent first molars and is gradually expanded to increase the width of the upper jaw.
The pre-orthodontic trainer can help your 6-10 year old child now. It is used to correct crowding and jaw discrepancies due to habits such as mouth breathing, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking. The starting trainer (blue) is soft for flexibility and maximum compliance and is worn for an average of 6 months. Once the dental alignment improves the hard (pink) trainer is used for an additional 6-12 months.
Retainers are a very important part of your orthodontic treatment. They are the only way to be sure that the correction that has taken place will be maintained. Our office generally uses the clear Essix retainer, but occassionally a more traditional Hawley retainer will be needed.
Many times primary teeth come out before the permanent teeth are ready to errupt. To be sure that enough room remains for those teeth to come in a space maintainer may be used. Cemented on the upper or lower molars it holds the space open until the permanent teeth errupt. A lower space maintainer is pictured.
